The 4th of June saw the Australian and British communities of Beijing come together for a day of food, drink and cricket. Fortunately the forecast thunderstorms cleared, replaced by perfect BBQ weather and ideal cricket conditions.
We’d like to thank the wide range of stallholders who helped make the day a success. We also hope everyone enjoyed the fun on offer, including a bouncy castle, bubble football and water fights for the children. The delicious selection of food and beverages on offer and the epic battle between bat and ball on the pitch made for a jovial atmosphere all afternoon.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, the English team battled admirably against a scintillating Australian pace attack to post a modest 96. Australia’s response started poorly, with early wickets putting them on the back foot. But a brave fight back saw them edge within striking distance of victory. In a dramatic climax, Australia required 5 to win off the final ball, and barring an unlikely 6, England looked set to take home the trophy. But despite the English players pushing back to guard the boundaries, the plucky Australian tail-ender was able to slash a four through the field, tying the match.
It was the perfect end to an entertaining game played in great spirit, and a fitting way to cap off the 2016 Outdoor BBQ Fun Day.

It was a great day out for the Australian and British communities on Saturday and with the first Ashes cricket match of 2016 ending in a tie, it gives all the more reason to make sure the rematch in September at the Great Aussie BBQ is bigger than ever!

The AustCham & BritCham Outdoor BBQ Fun Day will be the first of many 2016 community summer events, so come along and kick off the summer season with fun, food and friends.
The Great Aussie BBQ 2016 will be held this coming September.
