China to set-up new health commission

As part of recent state instructional reforms China’s central government is ceasing the National Health & Family Planning Commission. The original commission famously implemented then revised China’s ‘one-child policy’. Additionally the state reforms outlined a new Healthy China Initiative focused on more effectively delivering healthcare services to Chinese citizens.

Lack of senior female scientists an increasing concern

According to the office of Australia’s Chief Scientist, advanced degree qualified men and women enter the lifesciences workforce at roughly the same rate, yet only 17% of senior academics at major institutes and universities were women. Women need to be dissuaded from dropping out of science mid-careers affirmed Winsome Hall, a director at the Medical Research Commercialisation Fund, so to boost gender equity in lagging industries such as pharmaceuticals.

New study shows that China’s steps to reduce pollution has promising outcomes for the future

In a study that analyses data from over 200 government air pollution monitors in China, it was found that cities in China on average have decreased the concentration of fine particulates by 32 percent in 4 years. With major cities seeing the biggest decline in concentrations of fine particulates, it is estimated that if this reduction is sustained, residents in major cities will have their lifespans extended by an average of 2.4 years for people of all ages.
