Provincial governors now responsible for food security
China’s Ministry of Agriculture has released a statement from the State Council, outlining the role of provincial governors in ensuring food security. The governors will now be responsible for the amount of quality of farmland remaining stable, improving pollution control, verifying to authenticity of grain reserve data and protecting farmers. China investing billions to resettle poor residents
This year alone, China has allocated 5.5 billion yuan to resettle almost 1 million people from less economically developed areas in an attempt to free them from poverty. China plans to resettle approximately 10 million disadvantaged Chinese from these areas over the next five years. Click here to read the full article.

Alibaba promotes foreign goods in rural China
More foreign brands will be available at Alibaba’s 8,000 rural service stations during Chinese New Year. Alibaba will begin a campaign in mid-January promoting local specialty goods in addition to over 500 foreign products to rural buyers in anticipation of the Spring Festival. Chinese bid for Syngenta AG rejected
The world’s largest agrichemical company, Syngenta AG, has rejected a $42 billion takeover bid by China National Chemical Corp. Bloomberg has reported that Syngenta AG turned the bid down over regulatory concerns. Click here to read the full article.
Chinese and Australian Agriculture Ministers meet in Beijing
Minister Han Changfu met with the Hon. Barnaby Joyce at the 12th China-Australia Joint Agricultural Committee meeting last week. Both Ministers acknowledged that bilateral agricultural cooperation is an integral part of the trade relationship, which is now underpinned by the China-Australia FTA.
