Women in Agriculture

The “Women in Agriculture” luncheon, jointly hosted by the Australian Embassy and AustCham China at the elegant Wangjing Yan restaurant, underscored the Australian community’s dedicated support for women leaders within the agriculture sector. Chef Reggie Li’s masterful curation of Australian cuisine and a selection of Australian wines completed the luncheon experience.

Distinguished attendees included industry leaders from various related sectors and representatives from both the Australian and Chinese governments. The Australian Ambassador to China, His Excellency Mr Scott Dewar, warmly introduced our esteemed guest speakers, Ms Jenny van de Meeberg and Ms Matilda Ho.

Jenny, the head for trade at Apple & Pear Australia Limited, emphasised the importance of female mentorship and highlighted the exceptional capabilities of a predominantly female work environment. She shared a compelling example from her experience, illustrating how an office comprising 80% women not only navigated common challenges of maternity but excelled in efficiency, serving as an enduring source of inspiration.

Matilda, the Founder of Bits x Bites, provided valuable insights into the agricultural industry’s landscape in China and beyond. Significantly, she stressed the vital blend of technology and environmental protection for the future of agriculture. Moreover, her infectious humour and anecdotal stories lightened the room on several occasions.

The thought-provoking presentations were followed by a dynamic panel discussion led by Agriculture Minister-Counsellor Deb Langford of the Australian Embassy. The Q&A session with the guests illuminated both the achievements and challenges faced by women in agriculture, reinforcing the event’s focus on empowerment and recognition.

AustCham China extends sincere thanks to all participants for acknowledging and celebrating women’s leadership in the agriculture sector. We anticipate your presence at our future events, as we continue to champion diversity.
