James Laurenceson Urges Australia to Deepen Engagement with China’s Emerging Industries

On 9 June, Professor James Laurenceson, Director of the Australia-China Relations Institute at the University of Technology Sydney, was interviewed by 21st Century Business Herald in Beijing.

Laurenceson emphasized that China is rapidly becoming a global hub for the industries of the future. He called on Australia to strengthen its engagement with China to unlock long-term economic opportunities.

“We are already witnessing China’s accelerated leadership in sectors like electric vehicles, wind power, and solar energy,” Laurenceson told 21st Century. “China’s role in these strategic emerging industries will only continue to grow, and for Australia to secure its place in this new industrial landscape, deeper cooperation with the Chinese market is essential.”

While acknowledging China as a vital trading partner, Laurenceson underscored that its significance goes beyond traditional trade. He encouraged Australian businesses to move beyond a transactional approach and establish a meaningful presence in China.

“To truly seize the opportunities emerging in China’s advanced industries, Australian companies must embed themselves locally and engage more deeply with the market,” he said. “For firms seeking future growth, China should not be seen as optional—it should be seen as a priority.”
