Vaughn Barber, Chair of AustCham China, was featured in a full-page special report by People’s Daily—China’s most authoritative newspaper—during the 2025 Global Trade and Investment Promotion Summit organized by CCPIT in Beijing. The report highlighted insights from six foreign chamber leaders on China’s business landscape.

“Australian businesses remain committed to the Chinese market,” stated Mr. Barber. He cited AustCham China’s 2025 Doing Business in China Report which shows that 70% of Australian enterprises consider China a priority investment destination, and over half plan to expand geographically within China over the next three years.

Mr. Barber highlighted the evolving Australia-China economic ties, characterized by innovation-driven growth, green low-carbon transitions, and high value-added collaborations. This shift not only reinforces traditional trade strengths but also explores new sectors with growth potential. Collaboration between Australian and Chinese firms in the electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, battery recycling, and circular economy, demonstrates a resilient green industry ecosystem. China’s leadership in innovation and e-commerce serves as a valuable reference for Australian enterprises seeking cooperative opportunities.

Regarding global supply chain restructuring, Mr. Barber emphasized the ongoing transformation as a significant opportunity for Australia and China to enhance economic resilience. Strengthening resource processing and high value-added industries is crucial for sustainable growth. Investments in infrastructure and logistics will bolster supply chain resilience, positioning Australia as a reliable partner for safe, high-quality, and sustainable products.

Despite diversification considerations, 40% of surveyed Australian companies remain committed to the Chinese market. As Barber cited one respondent’s observation:”While we face pressure to diversify, China’s market opportunities remain too significant to ignore.” Australia welcomes Chinese investments in advanced manufacturing sectors. Looking ahead, he expressed confidence in the expansion of Australia-China cooperation in green supply chains and new energy sectors through increased investments and deeper collaboration.
