The 2025 Global Trade and Investment Promotion Summit was held in Beijing on May 22, under the theme “Embracing the Era of Digital Intelligence, Advancing Development Together.” Vaughn Barber, Chair of the China-Australia Chamber of Commerce (AustCham China), attended the event and delivered a keynote speech.
In his remarks, Barber emphasized that AustCham China’s position aligns with that of the Australian government — maintaining openness toward the Chinese market. “We see that 70% of Australian companies regard China as a priority investment destination,” he said. “Half of them are looking to further expand their presence here. Many others are actively exploring opportunities in China as part of their diversification strategies — and China presents a compelling option.”
Barber also underscored the importance of resilient and secure supply chains, noting that while trade opens markets, investment in infrastructure and logistics is essential to supporting those supply chains. “This is something we must discuss further — the future of supply chains depends not just on trade but on the systems that underpin it,” he added.
Highlighting the role of innovation, Barber stated: “Australia has a relatively small population and relies heavily on trade. China, as a global trading powerhouse, is also leading in many areas of technology and innovation — from climate change solutions to e-commerce. These are global challenges, and while we cannot solve them alone, we see China playing a leadership role in shaping a more sustainable future. In areas like e-commerce, China is far ahead of Australia. That’s why we are committed to cooperation — and eager to learn from China in the areas where we are currently falling behind.”
